History

The Franco Pugi brand originated in the 1970s from the entrepreneurial spirit of initiative and creativity of a young Franco Pugi. Franco came from a family of businessmen in the Florence area’s textile industry and began his business buoyed by a great passion and the desire to rediscover handicraft. The company was booming in the 1980s and 1990s, particularly thanks to export and popularity in America and Japan. In those years Franco decided to move to South America with his family and it was only 10 years later that he returned to Italy to keep a close eye on the leather production and form a new team that still heads management thanks to his energy and great enthusiasm. The collections vary greatly, from the classic with pastel and neutral colors to the business that adds class and vivacity even to the hardest work days. Moving on, there are modern models, inspired by American painters, and more eccentric and audacious models, like the pop with vibrant and bright colors and the Miss Frugi collection, conceived to tell a story in episodes about a beautiful and exuberant young lady in love with her bags. The leitmotif of the brand is “Every purse designed with passion will be carried with great pleasure and endure over time”.

HANDCRAFT PROCESS

Franco Pugi is the designer of his products. All the other steps of production are performed by an expert team of artisans, specialized in each step, who—as Franco Pugi himself said—are the “beating heart” of the company. Each handbag is born from an inspiration that Franco transforms into a design. From the design a paper pattern is built which is then changed into the sample of the finished product. Then the metal accessories are chosen and the materials and colors that the leather prototype will be made with are decided on. Calfhide is mainly used. Having outlined the prototype, the next step is cutting, which is done by hand making sure to use only the best parts of the hide. The leather is prepared and refined where necessary and then its different parts are assembled with a sewing machine. Once finished sewing, it’s time to hand-dye the edges. Everything is ready for the assembly of the leather parts that will make up the finished product, meticulously inspected down to every last detail to make sure that they meet the required company standards. All the steps of production call for great precision, skill, and know-how to create those collections that reflect the quality that the name Franco Pugi represents.
