Each trip is a discovery of the artisanal processes employed, of the most beautiful churches, of the villages, of the places of inspiration or of the masterpiece paintings by the most important artists in Italy's history. When you have VODIVÌ, you will be carrying more than just a bag, you'll have a piece of Italian history with you, a vivid memory to tell about, that you can brag about.
VODIVÌ is a fashion company that manages the production and sales of bags and semiprecious stones made entirely in Italy with natural materials according to the purest artisanal traditions which reveal the personality of the different territories they draw inspiration from. The mission is to combine a love of travel with the love of Italy and of high-quality handicraft. To respect the territory and in complete harmony with the environment, VODIVÌ is a spokesperson for the principle of environmental sustainability by constantly doing research into the best eco-sustainable materials on the market. All the products and processes used are natural and respect the surrounding environment. With a team including his daughter Pamela, the production manager, Beatrice, the designer, Eleonora, the communication manager and the other collaborators, owner Luciano began producing the first bag prototypes in 2013, seeking out the best hemp and cotton thread. In 2015 Luciano and his team decided to make a new line with vegetable-tanned leather, always following eco-sustainability principles. Therefore the new line is made with vegetable-tanned leather using applications taken from typical artisanal processes in the place inspiration was drawn from. For VODIVÌ, deciding exactly what bags and what collections to make all starts depends on the history and tradition of an Italian territory of origin, which becomes the common thread of the entire production. Specifically, the Petra collection was inspired by the Umbrian territory of Valnerina, the Intrecci Rinascimentali collection by Montefeltro—whose colors precisely reference the birthplace of Leonardo's Mona Lisa—and the Paesaggi collection tells of the most beautiful places in the lower Umbrian Valley. The innovation then lies in the combination of the product and the travel experience offered through our partnership with travel agencies and tour operators; each bag gives you a chance to take a trip precisely to the places that they represent, to visit the cities and places that inspired the designer, take in the history and culture, see the artisan shops where the bag was made with your own eyes, and, upon request, even VODIVÌ's showroom. When you buy a VODIVÌ bag, you also become a "traveler" that breathes in the air of Italy and can experience firsthand all the hard work that is actually behind each individual creation.
The raw materials and production processes chosen fully respect nature and the surrounding environment. The materials used are hemp, cotton and vegetable-tanned leather, therefore during tanning only natural materials like dirt and clay are used. This type of processing makes the leather more valuable, because it is more porous and its characteristics—like consistency, strength and the classic pungent scent—are kept intact. The dies are exclusively natural colors. The "Paesaggi" and "Intrecci Rinascimentali" collections stand out thanks to the cerulean blue color obtained from dye with woad. Woad (in Latin, Isatis tinctoria) is a plant that in the Middle Ages was known as blue gold. To create such a deep, vivid color, the woad is dried and then chopped up before being mixed with water. The print on the decorations and the linings of the Intrecci Rinascimentali collection are created with so-called "rust printing", a common technique in the Middle Ages especially in the Marche and Romagna regions. The main ingredient for rust printing is iron, which is then mixed with flour and vinegar. Other chemically synthesized mineral bases are added to this mixture to make any shade of blue or green. The main steps are printing with walnut molds dipped in the dye, drying and fixing. Fixing entails spreading a natural mixture of water and ashes on the print to bestow the leather an indelible color, with an unparalleled vividness and brightness. Also in the Intrecci Rinascimentali collection, some bags have a hand-painted ceramic decoration from Casteldurante on the front. In the 1500s this ancient area produced the most beautiful majolicas of the Renaissance. Lastly, the element that characterizes the Petra collection referencing the territory of origin is the Pink Stone taken from Mount Subasio. It is chiseled and handcrafted from construction scrap. Then, the bags' detailing tells the story of the territory by referencing the architectural elements of the place they are inspired by, like the rose window and the capitals of the Church of Campi, a typical town in the Valnerina area.
Each bag has: a warranty stamp on the vegetable-tanned leather, a sort of ID card where the production chain and product history is described, a travel itinerary in Italy guaranteed with the help of a tour operator.
Notable works and events
VODIVÌ is a very young company, and yet it has been asked to take part in the White and Mipel trade fairs in Milan. In 2016, the company was asked to take part in the London industry trade fair, Pure London, which is one of the major events for fashion and brand promotion, as well as for emerging international designers.
The organizational model that VODIVÌ works with is very innovative, just like the entire philosophy that pervades the company. Umbria is the territory we have told the most about. The first collections were inspired by this region, telling about the history and culture of the places there. VODIVÌ is in Spoleto. Each bag's design is conceived at the company and there is a showroom where you can see the quality of each product for yourself. Instead the production is spread out among artisan shops in each single place that the collections seek to narrate: Urbania, that is, the ancient Casteldurante, Montefeltro, Carpegna with the ancient printing shop of Carpegna and the entire area of the Umbrian Valley and Valnerina.
